Interior Painting

At Ahern Painting, we’re passionate about impeccable finishes that last. And a home’s interior gives its warmth and comfort. We make yours look its best with:

EXTENSIVE PREPARATION

Protecting your home’s flooring and furnishings is the key to our work and usually the most time consuming.

In many instances, the most effective solution to poorly painted trim is complete paint removal, which we do using non-toxic materials. Where mechanical or hand sanding is sufficient, we will ensure the containment of dust and debris to the work areas using dust barriers and Zipwalls.

We clean up with HEPA filtration equipped vacuums so that even the tiniest debris particles are contained.

BEAUTIFUL FINISH

We maintain a meticulously clean work environment throughout each job, and use tacking rags to remove surface contaminants just prior to applying the finish paint — ensuring a dust-free finish.

We will hand sand between coats and carefully select premium paints and applicators (brushes, roller covers) to deliver a fine finish that we are proud to back with our guarantee.

We promise a beautiful, high quality, professional result for the interior of your house.

Whether your painting project involves new construction or historic restoration, we welcome the opportunity to meet with you.

Exterior Painting

Choosing the right company for painting the exterior of your house is an important decision. When applied with the correct tools and technique, this new luster can last for years or decades. But if the finishing process is careless or compromised, the results can range from unsightly to irreparable.

At Ahern Painting, our goal is to deliver the highest quality craftsmanship, not the lowest possible price. We work together with our clients to develop a scope of work that addresses all of their concerns and yields the best results.

PREPARATION

We start by pressure washing to remove surface contaminants both visible and invisible (including evaporative salts that accumulate on eaves, overhangs and soffits).

Next, we employ a variety of methods for paint preparation, from hand scraping to stripping to dry abrasive blasting, always taking the necessary level of care to analyze and repair damaged substrates and stabilize them prior to painting.

FINISHING

We use only premium paints and materials, such as Benjamin Moore. We are happy to advise you on product selection to ensure the job meets your aesthetic and budgetary requirements.

Paint and wood failure is common to exteriors challenged by the Northeast climate. We are experts at Problem Solving and able to advise on how to best maintain the beauty and strength of your property under any condition.

From painstakingly protecting your landscape to minimizing our presence in your home, from our thorough process of surface preparation to our use of only the finest materials, at Ahern Painting, we treat your home as if it were our own. This is the Ahern Painting promise; and we back it up with our guarantee.

There’s a crucial and noticeable difference between a job being done and a job being done the right way. And you can trust Ahern Painting to finish the exterior of your home the right way.

WOOD RESTORING

Ahern Painting considers the entire space when restoring a home.

Your beautifully painted walls deserve to be highlighted by brilliant woodwork and furnishings.

Swedish Putty is sometimes used for repair purposes. Please see our Natural Wood Finishes section for details.

Restoration is an investment in preserving your home’s fine history. It means that the professionals at Ahern Painting won’t apply good paint over bad, or ignore problems in previous workmanship. It means we bring a passion for our craft to beautify your home.

Deck Refinishing

Nothing beats the simple pleasures of relaxing outside on your deck. And Ahern Painting can help guarantee that yours is easy to clean and maintain, providing years of enjoyment with friends and family. We use the latest technology and the best materials to give your hardwoods and softwoods a beautiful finish that’s a breeze to maintain.

The key to long-term durability and aesthetics is surface preparation. In most cases, power washing is insufficient. It cleans dirt off the surface but does not remove any dead wood fibers without gouging the decking. If the dead wood fibers are not removed, there is not enough profile for the stain to penetrate the wood. Remember the purpose of stain is to penetrate the wood. If you have dead wood fibers on your decking, the stain will not penetrate and will have an uneven, blotchy appearance when finished. On new decking, the same reasoning can be made for a different problem.

The milling process can leave a glaze on new wood that inhibits penetration of stain. This is commonly referred to as “mill glaze”.

We have state-of-the-art floor machines able to mechanically sand any mahogany, ipe, nerabu, cedar, or oak to ensure uniform appearance and optimum penetration of the stain. All floor equipment is equipped with a HEPA vacuum system to minimize dust. The more time and care taken in preparation, the better the final results will be.

In addition to thorough preparation, we use a high solids version of an alkyd with the addition of synthetic resins. These coatings offer a combination of durability and penetration that many products on the market cannot match.

Natural Wood Finishes

A properly restored home is only complete when the woodwork is returned to its natural luster and color.

Multiple coats of varnish and shellac over the years can lead to alligatored finishes and nearly opaque coloration. At Ahern Painting, we distinguish ourselves from other companies by attending to this vital aspect of your living space.

Replacing durable, old-growth wood with new plantation-grown and engineered materials is a poor substitute.

You do not add to the value of your home by placing cheap products over valuable, albeit worn material.

At Ahern Painting, we use a variety of non-toxic materials to remove old finishes and restore the original beauty of your wood.

Swedish Putty

If the restoration of your natural wood services requires repairs to the wood surface, Swedish putty may be used. Swedish putty dries hard and can be used as a filler for wood surfaces.

The restoration of your woodwork can create a luxurious feel in your home. The woodwork is further highlighted by your freshly painted room. We take great care in the handling of your natural woodwork.

Decorative Wood Graining

Mimic the warmth of stained wood with decorative wood graining.  This technique gives new life to areas where it may be cost-prohibitive to upgrade to wood (such as garage doors or entry doors).

Ahern Painting is formally trained in decorative finishing through the Faux Effects Studio in New York. Ask us how our craftsman can enrich the look of your home!

If you have a desire for us to match your floor, cabinets, furniture to another piece of wood we can duplicate the look to give the room an even appearance. All decorative work includes a sample to be approved by the customer prior to starting the work.

Wallpaper Installation & Removal

Our expertise doesn’t stop at paints and coatings.

For the homeowner with an appreciation for complex textures and patterns, Ahern Painting’s experienced staff will skillfully accent your home with your wallpaper selection.

Wallpaper removal is often a homeowner’s least favorite improvement project.

It is a time-consuming project, is very messy and, if not done properly, can result in wall damage and a greater expense to replace the walls.

Let Ahern Painting expertly handle this chore while updating the look of your home at the same time.

Commercial Painting Services

Epoxy Coatings

Today’s basements and garages are no longer just storage areas- they are extensions of our living space. Looking to turn an unused portion of your basement into a beautiful wine cellar? Or convert your garage to a modern storage space? It’s easier than you think!

Our state-of-the-art refinishing equipment along with the wide color availability of our coatings will both brighten and neaten the appearance of your basement and/or garage floor.

Concrete floors are scarified (taken down to a smooth surface to the feel of 80 grit sandpaper) and an industrial grade multi-layer epoxy coating is skillfully applied to your design specifications.

Vapor Abrasive Blasting

Your handsome wood structure is distinctive, but it’s well known that wooden homes/buildings often show signs of weather more quickly than other types of siding. When it’s time to refinish wood, this project involves countless hours of sanding or harsh chemical stripping.

Preparation is vital in providing the proper basis for paint or stain application. Our state-of-the-art abrasive blasting equipment uses environmentally friendly corncob to safely and effectively remove old stain as well as give the wood a clean surface perfect for staining or painting.

Advantages of “Vapor Abrasive Blasting” as a method of paint / stain removal:

  • No harsh chemical stripping! Uses organic abrasive media.
  • Safe for your people and landscaping. Won’t harm grass or shrubs!
  • Eliminates the need for expensive and time-consuming sanding
  • Safely and effectively exposes the natural grain of your wood siding to maximize surface adhesion

Aluminum/Vinyl Siding Refinishing

THE PREPARATION:

Refinishing your aluminum or vinyl siding can restore vibrancy to your home and protect it from the elements for many years. To bring new life to your property, and guarantee easy maintenance, we break each job into two parts:

Good preparation always precedes a QUALITY FINISH. A lasting & durable bonding of paint to aluminum or vinyl siding is obtained by applying the paint to a CLEAN & PROFESSIONALLY PREPARED SURFACE.

  1. MILDEW, MOLD & ALGAE STAINS are removed by a bleach solution (a non-chlorine solution specifically formulated for exterior applications) applied by a low pressure spray. Good coverage is assured.
  2. CHALKING, DIRT & POLLUTANTS are removed by a detergent cleaner & by a HIGH PRESSURE POWER-WASHING.

THE FINISH:

Three coats of BENJAMIN MOORE MOOREGUARD is applied professionally by PRODUCTION AIRLESS SPRAY EQUIPMENT. (Airless sprayers produce little over spray & therefore paint goes on your house, not on shrubs, trees & plants). The resultant finish is a smooth quality coating. This DURABLE FACTORY-LIKE FINISH is fade resistant & resists peeling, cracking & chipping.

EASY MAINTENANCE:

This NEW FINISH may easily be cleaned by your garden hose & is MILDEW RESISTANT. This finish has an exceptionally long service life and is guaranteed for 10 years.

Color Consultation

The right coatings can transform a room. But it’s tough to know which colors work best and even tougher to envision how they might look on your walls.

If you don’t have a definitive color vision for your new space, let us guide you through the color selection process.  Ahern Painting offers a one-hour color consultation at no extra cost with each booking.

The right colors set the tone of your home: blues for tranquility, jewel tones for richness, and rustic colors for warmth, for example. Years of experience and attention to detail allow us to find the perfect colors to highlight interior and exterior architecture and express the mood our customers want to project.

Ahern Painting can also “virtually” paint your home before the first brush touches your walls or siding. Using a digital photo and painting software, we will show you how the new colors will look on paper. Our top priority is to achieve the most beautiful finished product and make you comfortable with the work.

Offsite Finishing

Avoid the smell & mess of refinishing at home. How? Our secret is a cutting-edge, industrial caliber spray booth. At our shop we carefully apply proprietary coatings using this top-of-the-line air-assisted sprayer that makes any piece look brand new. A trip through our spray booth transforms your furniture from shabby to fabulous.

Don’t throw it out! Instead of replacing dull, weathered furniture, embrace it with a gorgeous, rich finish that’s even more brilliant than the original. And if you’re aiming to give the room a face lift, consider refinishing the doors, windows and cabinets you’ve already got.

Our proprietary conversion varnish and epoxies are:

  • Stronger
  • More scuff and scratch resistant
  • More moisture tolerant
  • More attractive – we guarantee a factory finish!

Ahern Painting can bring practically any item back to life!

  • Shutters

Chemical Stripping

How does Ahern Painting prepare to refinish antique furniture, historical shutters, ornate moldings or peeling front porch columns (for example) that show years of aging and weathering? Sometimes sanding or abrasive blasting is not the most effective or practical way to restore your wooden treasures. Whether the goal its to highlight wood’s natural beauty with stain or provide a properly prepped wood substrate ready to accept a painted finish, chemical stripping may be the most effective course of action- and the best way to preserve the delicate profile of your unique wood pieces.

There are dozens of chemical paint strippers on the market, however many are caustic, dangerous and difficult to work with. Chemical paint stripping can be a messy, unsafe process for the DIY group. At Ahern Painting, our coatings experts are professionally trained, and our shop is well-equipped to take on most chemical stripping projects. When performed correctly this chemical process will not harm the substrate or leave behind hazardous by-products.
